Council officials in Hailsham have launched an appeal for information after public toilets were left 'out of action' by vandals.
The public toilets in North Street were broken into on November 8, resulting in the door frame being broken as entry was forced.
Furthermore, the hand sanitiser dispenser located inside the building was destroyed, spreading sanitiser gel across the floor.
Town Council staff took the immediate decision to temporarily close the public toilets whilst the necessary repairs were made to the door frame and the hand sanitiser spillage cleaned up.
The hand sanitiser dispenser has since been replaced and the Town Council is looking to reinforce the door frame in the near future.
The incident has been reported to Sussex Police and the incident has been noted, although they not looking to take any further action at this time.
Town Clerk John Harrison said:
“We are appalled by the vandalism at the North Street public conveniences which has caused disruption to the facility, resulting in a temporary closure earlier today to undertake repairs and a programme of sanitisation to be undertaken.”
“A lot of money and time goes into maintaining the public toilets, and it is particularly disappointing that this should take place at a time when our local community is paying particular attention to hand hygiene and hand-washing given the ongoing risks of contracting COVID-19.”
“I would urge anyone with any information about who is responsible for causing this mindless act of vandalism to contact the police immediately by calling 101.”
