Tributes paid to 'outstanding councillor and friend' former Worthing Mayoress Norah Fisher

Tributes have been paid to Former Mayoress of Worthing, Councillor Norah Fisher, who has recently died. Cllr Fisher was well known in the area for attending civic functions with her beloved labradoodle, Herbie. Yesterday (Tuesday, 7), Adur and Worthing Councils announced Cllr Fisher's death, praising her service to the borough as a councillor, and for her work with charities for the less able-bodied. Norah served as Mayoress to Councillor Bob Smytherman between 2013 and 2014, and as councillor for Tarring ward between 2008 and 2016. Cllr Smytherman said: "I hope the borough will come together in the months ahead in joy rather than sorrow to remember the amazing life and service Norah gave to Worthing." Current Mayor of Worthing, Cllr Hazel Thorpe, said: "Norah and Herbie will be missed but remembered also for their devotion to duty, fortitude and inspiration to others. "Norah was never the one to give up when the going was tough. "She was an outstanding councillor and friend." The authorities' said Norah's labradoodle Herbie accompanied her on every civic visit after insisting he became Mayor's Cadet during her time as Mayoress. She used an electric mobility impaired vehicle due to suffering from rheumatoid arthritis for more than 30 years. Cllr Fisher was Secretary of Worthing Access and Mobility Group, which brought about many changes in Worthing to improve public access to buildings; she was also involved with several committee working with disabled issues. She was an avid supporter of Brighton & Hove Albion and she was Vice Chair of their Disabled Supporters Group, assisted with away trips and worked to improve facilities at the Club's ground. Norah was also a Governor of Thomas A Becket Middle and First Schools, and was made an Honorary Alderwoman of the borough in 2019. MP for Worthing West, Sir Peter Bottomley said: “As we miss her, let us try to continue doing more in the many fields that mattered to her, with her courage, her grace and her energy and constancy.” More Radio is continuously dedicated to providing a quality news service on-air and online, reporting local stories that matter across Sussex. If you enjoyed reading this story, then check out our home page at moreradio.online where you can find the latest from the county, along with features and competitions from our presenters, as well as listening to the station live.
