Troubled Hove Gin Bar Will Open Branch In Worthing

A Hove gin bar can now move to Worthing after its licensing bid was approved.

The Gin Tub will open at 10 High Street – an old church building that was converted into a pub 30 years ago. It will take over the smaller, former craft alehouse.

Brighton Bars Limited applied to Worthing Borough Council for a new alcohol licence in August. But because five members of the public objected, the request had to be considered by the council’s licensing sub-committee on Tuesday, October 4.

Sussex Police and Worthing Pubwatch removed their initial objections after agreeing a number of conditions with the venue.

Gin Tub originally wanted to open and serve alcohol between 11am and 1am Mondays to Wednesdays, and 11am to 2am Thursdays to Sundays, and play live music between 6pm and 11pm, seven days a week. This has now been scaled back slightly following discussions with the council.

The venue can now sell alcohol between 11am and 12:30am, Mondays to Wednesdays, between 11am and 1.30am Thursdays to Saturdays, and until 11.30pm on Sundays. Sunday opening hours will be until midnight, rather than the 2am originally proposed.

The Gin Tub’s Hove venue had its licence revoked in 2019 after cocaine was found in the toilets.

This has since been reinstated on appeal but this concerned some objectors during the licensing hearing.

Francesca Green will be the designated premises supervisor (DPS ) at the Worthing venue. She told the licensing committee that the business ‘had changed’.

“After previously losing our licence, everything has changed since then,” said Ms Green. “We have really good training and we have a really well-trained team that we’ll bring with us to Worthing.”

Conditions agreed with Sussex Police say the venue must have an ‘absolute zero tolerance policy towards drugs and drug misuse’ and must declare any drugs seized on a monthly basis.

Stephen Guille, director of Brighton Bars Limited said: “We have had our problems in the past but never with antisocial behaviour or noise. Our demographic is 30-somethings – certainly not youngsters. I think we’re going to improve the area as opposed to be detrimental to the area.”
