Twins Born 15 Minutes Apart Have Birthdays In Different Years

Twins born just 15 minutes apart have ended up having separate birthdays in different years - an event that has around a one in two million chance of happening.

Fatima Madrigal and Robert Trujillo welcomed their son Alfredo Antonio Trujillo at a medical centre in California at 11.45pm on New Year's Eve.

But as the clock struck midnight, his twin sister Aylin Yolanda Trujillo was born making her birthday New Year's Day.

Aylin weighed five pounds 14 ounces and was the first baby born at Natividad Medical Center in Monterey County in 2022.

Ms Madrigal said: "It's crazy to me that they are twins and have different birthdays.

"I was surprised and happy that she arrived at midnight."

Aylin's older brother weighed six pounds one ounce.

The fraternal twins join three older siblings, two girls and a boy, with Ms Madrigal saying the family could not wait to meet them.

Across the US, around 120,000 twins are born every year, making up just 3% of all births.

However, twins born with different birthdays are rare with some estimating the chance of them being born in different years as one in two million.

Family doctor at the medical centre, Dr Ana Abril Arias, called the twins' birth "one of the most memorable" of her career.

"It was an absolute pleasure to help these little ones arrive here safely in 2021 and 2022. What an amazing way to start the new year," she said.
