Police have arrested a pair of 14-year-old boys on suspicion of arson in connection with a large fire in fields south-west of Horsham.

Officers said they are also working to identify two additional male suspects who may have been involved in the incident.

It was on Tuesday afternoon (11 August) that firefighters and other emergency workers were alerted to flames that had erupted in fields in Old Wickhurst Lane at Highwood, where the A264 joins the A24.

At its peak, crews accompanying five engines from Horsham, Crawley and Burgess Hill were attending along with several off-road vehicles and a water carrier from Burgess Hill.

Up to 20 acres were ablaze, firefighters said, but no injuries were reported.

Detective Sergeant Joanna Duncan said:

"We're appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time or who saw what happened to come forwards and speak to us.

"We suspect that this fire was started deliberately and it is fortunate that nobody was hurt and that this did not become a much more serious incident.

"Anyone with information can report online or call 101, quoting 1157 of 11/08."

The two boys arrested earlier have been released under investigation.
