Two Combine Harvesters Catch Fire In Turners Hill Fields

West Sussex Fire and Rescue were mobilised yesterday (Aug 11) after two farm vehicles were reported as being on fire in Selsfield Road, Turners Hill.

It happened at 1.24pm yesterday afternoon.

Fire engines from Crawley and East Grinstead were sent to the scene as well as further engines from East Sussex and an off-road vehicle from East Grinstead.

A spokesperson from West Sussex Fire and Rescue said:

"Upon arrival crews found two combine harvesters in separate fields that were well alight. The crews separated to deal with the two fires and further off-road vehicles from Horsham, Shoreham and East Sussex were mobilised, as well as a water carrier from Surrey Fire & Rescue Service.

"Firefighters used hose reels, breathing apparatus, water shuttles, fog nails and compressed air foam systems to extinguish both of the blazes, which are believed to be of accidental ignition.

"Due to the extreme risk of wildfires, we are encouraging farmers to proactively create 15 metre firebreaks in their fields, particularly around hedgerows and buildings, to limit the spread of fire in an emergency."
