A world-record attempt was due to begin in Shoreham this morning (August 31).

Business studies student Jack Bates, 18, and veterinary nursing student Melissa Shaw, 19, were reportedly beginning their shot at the world Tandem rowing record for the 19-years-and-under heavyweight category.

It currently stands at 37 hours, set in 2018 in Kent.

However, a spokesperson at Shoreham Rowing Club, where they're making their attempt, says Jack and Melissa are aiming for 48 hours' rowing.

In the bid, Jack and Melissa will undertake shifts of two or four hours, swapping over on a rowing machine so as to keep the rowing action continuously moving.

If all goes well, the contenders, who are from Brighton and Lancing respectively, should beat the existing record around 11am on Thursday morning.
