Two Hastings Anti-Lockdown Protesters Arrested

Anti-Lockdown Protestors in an Unlawful Assembly in Alexandra Park, Hastings, on Sunday 14 March

Police arrested two women protesting against lockdown regulations in Alexandra Park in Hastings on Sunday morning (March 21) — one of them, on suspicion of assaulting an officer.

Officers also implemented a Dispersal Order, put in place to combat a second weekly assembly of anti-lockdown campaigners whose protest has been claimed by a group calling itself "Stand In The Park".

Police said about 30 people who'd gathered in the park leading up to 11am were required to leave.

Officers claim they 'engaged' with the people who were there, to explain the government's safety laws surrounding the coronavirus, and to encourage them to leave in compliance with the dispersal order.

Police issued fixed penalties for breaking Covid-19 rules to one man and three women.

Of the women, one was additionally arrested on suspicion of assaulting an officer, and the other after allegedly failing to provide their details.

The group left by mid-day, police said.

The owners of a café in Alexandra Park, "Eat At The Park", told More Radio on Monday morning they had decided to keep their establishment, serving take-aways, closed during the time the protests took place.

They said they wanted nothing to do with the group behaving unlawfully — and the presence of campaigners breaking Covid restrictions meant they felt unable to guarantee the safety of their law-abiding staff and customers.
