Two men charged with public order offences after Brighton v Palace game

After eight arrests in connection with the so-called "A23 Derby" on Saturday (February 29), police have confirmed two men have been charged with public order offences. Steve Bassett, 27, of Swievelands Road in Westerham, Kent, has been charged with assault following his arrest in Air Street in central Brighton. Miles Girling, 21, of Engadine Close in Croydon faces a charge of being in possession of a firework when entering a sporting event. Both are due before Brighton Magistrates' Court on March 19. Of the six others detained, a 48-year-old man from Bexhill arrested at the Amex on suspicion of theft was released without charge. A 50 year-old woman from Bexhill, arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon at the Amex, was released on conditional bail until May 31. Two men from Croydon, aged 19 and 24, were arrested in Queens Road, Brighton, on suspicion of public order offences, and were released on conditional bail until March 28. Two others were arrested at The Amex: A 29-year-old man from Rustington, detained on suspicion of common assault and affray, has been released on conditional bail until March 30. A 28-year-old man, also from Rustington, arrested on suspicion of obstructing a police officer in the execution of their duty, was released on conditional bail until March 30. Additionally, British Transport Police have been referred to two police watchdogs — the Professional Standards Department and the Independent Office For Police Conduct. Sussex Police said it's after a man sustained a minor injury while officers were removing him as they responded to a report of public order offences in central Brighton around 10am. Brighton failed to play the home advantage against long-term rivals Crystal Palace, with the visitors taking the game at the Amex 0–1 (Ayew, 70'), and putting the Seagulls just one point clear of teams in the drop zone.
