Two Public Space Protection Orders To Be Renewed In Lewes

Lewes District Council has renewed the orders for a further three years, banning alcohol consumption after being asked to stop, and dog dirt being left in public places.

The two orders were put in place in 2017 for three years and were due to expire this month (November).

They will now run until 2023.

One of the orders means anyone in the street, who an officer tells to stop drinking alcohol, must do so — or it could be confiscated.

The other compels dog-walkers to pick up any dirt their animals leave in any public area.

Exemptions to the dog-fouling rule include disabled people.

PSPOs are measures councils can use to protect the community from anti-social behaviour and they restrict what people can do in specific areas.

Breaching an order can result in a fine of up to £1,000 or prosecution.

Councillor Johnny Denis, Cabinet member for Communities and Customers, said:

"We take pride in helping to create and maintain a clean environment for residents that is clear of dog mess, and it is incumbent upon pet owners to abide by this order.

"Similarly, we want our town centre to remain free of problem street drinking.

"So I am pleased that both these orders are continuing as part of the package of measures we use to ensure residents enjoy a great quality of life in our district."

The decision to renew the PSPOs follows a public consultation held during September and October this year, in which 89% of respondents believed the orders were needed to prevent these types of anti-social behaviour.

Councillor Denis added:

"Thank you to all those who took part in the consultation as your views really do help inform the decisions we make."
