Two young entrepreneurs from Sussex have received a coveted award for their new business projects.

Peter Griffen from East Sussex and Emmanuel Oyemade from Brighton have joined five other South East winners aged 18 to 30 who will benefit from a £5,000 grant, one-on-one business coaching and an allowance to cover living costs as part of Innovate UK Young Innovator Awards.

Peter, 24, who hails from Newhaven, has developed a fully adjustable footstool named Lavata for people with Oedema — leg swelling, common in cancer and post-op patients, in response to a request by staff at Royal Brompton Hospital.

He told More Radio:

"Levata was developed in collaboration with Royal Brompton Hospital.

"The project began during the final year of my Product Design Degree at Brunel University but I gained the opportunity to turn it into a commercial reality when I won a place on Innovate UK’s Young Innovator program.

"I am extremely excited to turn my concept into a reality that has the potential to dramatically improve patients' quality of life."

Emmanuel, 22, from Brighton, was inspired by the struggles of people setting up home working spaces in the pandemic to create Tower, a modular desk organiser which lets people maximise the usually unused vertical space above their desks.

Emmanuel told More Radio:

"From the grant funding to the training and mentorship provided by Innovate UK and KTN, winning this award will take my business to the next level.

"Through the various modules available (with Tower), users will be able to optimise, personalise and customise their desk space to create an environment where you can produce your best work."

Now in its third year, Innovate UK’s Young Innovators programme continues to support high-potential young people from diverse backgrounds.
