Two Teenagers Convicted For Assaulting Hastings Man With Knife

Two teenagers have been convicted in relation to a serious assault on a man in Hastings.

Police were called to George Street at around 6.10pm on May 3, 2021 after reports a man had been attacked with a knife.

Information on the identity of two suspects from witnesses and members of the public, helped police arrest the them shortly afterwards.

The boys were picked out of an identity parade and CCTV footage from around the scene of the assault placed them both there.

They were both charged and appeared at Lewes Crown Court on Friday (April 22).

A 16-year-old boy pleaded guilty to affray and possession of a bladed article. He has been remanded in custody ahead of sentencing at a later date.

At an earlier hearing, a 17-year-old boy also pleaded guilty to affray. He has been released on court bail ahead of sentencing.

Investigator Caroline Bendell said:

"These two boys callously assaulted a vulnerable man and it was only through sheer luck that his injuries were not more serious.

"There is no place for violence or knife crime in our community. It is a myth that carrying a knife makes you safer - you are actually at far more risk of harm and face serious consequences if caught.

"Knives can ruin lives, and we do a huge amount of work as a force to proactively tackle knife crime in Sussex, including taking robust action against anyone found to be carrying or using a knife."

Members of the public are also encouraged to report information to police either online or by calling 101. Always dial 999 in an emergency. Information can be reported anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or Childline on 0800 111.
