An event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of 'V-J Day' - the day on which Imperial Japan surrendered in World War II, in effect bringing the war to an end - is to take place in Worthing today.
The Mayor and Mayoress of Worthing will join veterans at the Town Hall War Memorial today (Saturday) at a small private event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VJ Day.
The event, which is being led by the Worthing Veteran's Association, will begin at 10.50am to observe a two minutes silence at 11am.
This will be followed by a reading of the 'Cry for Peace Around the World' by the Town Cryer, Bob Smytherman.
Events are also taking place around the UK, being led by members of the Royal Family, who will pay tribute to the tens of thousands of service personnel who fought in the war against Japan.
In Worthing, VJ Day will also be marked by the Armed Forces Flags being flown at the Town Hall from Friday 14 until Monday 17 August. The anniversary event has been organised to comply with the government's social distancing guidelines.
Cllr Lionel Harman, the Mayor of Worthing said:
"This year is a significant anniversary marking the end of World War Two and an important date to remember and commemorate those who fought and those who sacrificed their lives during the Far East campaign.
"Unfortunately due to the COVID pandemic we are unable to mark the date in the way it deserves but our tributes will be paid respectfully nonetheless."
Members of the public are urged not to attend the private event to ensure public safety.
