Vigil and memorial for firefighter Anthony Knott in Lewes this evening

A candle-lit vigil and a memorial ceremony, incorporating prayers and a silence, is to be held in Lewes this evening (Friday, 17) to honour Anthony Knott, the firefighter whose body was found in the River Ouse a week ago (January, 10). Organisers said the event this evening will be centred on the Cliffe Bridge over the river in the town, a few hundred yards south from where the 33-year-old disappeared on the night of December 20 last year. It's being reported that a Book of Condolences will be opened in the Riverside Centre next to the bridge at 6pm, to be followed by a public assembly in the Cliffe Precinct at 7pm. Prayers will be led by Rev. Jules Middleton, from Lewes's Trinity Church, and it's intended to keep two minutes of silence at 7.41pm—the time when images of the father-of-four were last seen on CCTV footage, recorded on the night of his disappearance. According to organisers, the bridge cannot be formally closed to traffic for the ceremony, but it's intended to ask motorists, who wish to use the route through the pedestrianised centre of Lewes, to pause their journeys. A petition to fence off the River Ouse, in whose waters the body of Mr. Knott was discovered, has received over 2,700 signatures.
