Wealden District Council Aims To Install Electric Car Chargers In Car Parks This Year

Wealden District Council hopes to install charging points for electric vehicles in its car parks later this year, a senior councillor has said.

On Monday (17 May), cabinet member for economic development Roy Galley told the council’s overview and scrutiny committee that the council was preparing to put out to tender contracts to install charging points at a number of its car parks.

Cllr Galley said: “We are making progress with the electrical vehicle charging and hopefully we might be going into a tendering exercise with a number of firms or a single partner to see if we can get some charging points on the ground this year.”

In October last year, Wealden’s cabinet directed officers to pursue  a ‘partnership model’ of providing electric car charging points in the district.
This would see the costs of installation (and probably the eventual profit) split between the council and a second organisation.

Cabinet opted for this approach as it could allow the council to bring in external funding for the project. This could include funding from the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV), which offers grant funding for charger installation (although it is capped at £7,500 per unit).

While this funding is intended for on-street parking, the council says OLEV have indicated that some of the district’s car parks may be eligible.
Currently, the district is considered to have only eight fully-accessible charging locations (although there are some additional private charging points as well).

The move to improve access to car charging points also follows the government announcing plans to stop the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles from 2030.
