Weir In, Ashworth Out In Brighton And Hove Albion Shake-Up

Brighton and Hove Albion have announced two major changes to the club's backroom structure this week.

Weir installed by Albion

David Weir has been appointed as Brighton's new technical director with immediate effect.

The former Rangers, Everton and Scotland defender has been covering the role in an interim capacity since February of this year, and the club has now moved to make this permanent.

Chairman Tony Bloom told the club's website:

“David’s credentials are very strong, as he has shown in the various roles he has held with us.

"During his recent role as acting technical director he has used his experience, knowledge and ability in supporting both Graham Potter and the men's first-team and Hope Powell with the women's first-team.

"David will oversee all football operations; including recruitment, analysis, medical and player welfare, across both the men's and women's set-up."

Ashworth confirmed for Toon

Weir's arrival was announced shortly after compensation, reportedly in the region of £3.5m, was agreed between the Seagulls and Newcastle United for Dan Ashworth to join the North East giants.

Ashworth will become the Geordies' sporting director after an agreement was reached to release him from his current contractual obligations with immediate effect.

A statement issued by Newcastle United said:

"The terms of this agreement will remain confidential between the clubs and are subject to Premier League approval.

"Newcastle United will issue further information following the relevant approval process."
