West Sussex: "Economy Reset" And Climate Change Discussions

West Sussex County Hall, Chichester

Major changes in how West Sussex County Council could manage its finances are set to be discussed by leading councillors next Tuesday (July 21).

According to County Hall, steps have begun to ensure the local authority is carbon neutral by 2030.

Also among papers to be talked through were proposals to reset the county's economy following the impact of Covid-19.

Leader of the County Council, Paul Marshall (Conservative, Storrington), said:

"Despite the difficult times we are currently experiencing there are still a great deal of important issues which need to be discussed and agreed.

"How our economy and our county more generally comes back from this massive global crisis will be key and it is vitally important we examine these issues at our cabinet meeting."

The draft Climate Change Strategy 2020-2030 was already examined by the Environment and Communities Scrutiny Committee, at a meeting on Wednesday 24 June.

West Sussex County Council said the development of the strategy was overseen by a Climate Change Advisory Group which was formed at the request of the Cabinet Member for the Environment last year.

The group involved members of all political parties, as well as members of the West Sussex Youth Cabinet and invited community representatives from the South East Climate Alliance.

A draft economy reset plan has been produced to supersede the county council's existing Economic Growth Plan.

It proposes nine priority themes to help mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on the West Sussex economy.

The discussion was set for a virtual Cabinet meeting, to be held on Tuesday 21 July at 10.30am.
