West Wittering Man Kayaks Four Seas Around Turkey Coast For Suicide Charity

A keen kayaker from West Wittering has set himself the challenge of travelling 1,250 miles in his kayak around the coast of Turkey.

Jack Gatacre, aged 30 from West Wittering, will have traveled in the Black Sea, north of Istanbul through the Marmara Sea, into the Aegean, and will finish in the Mediterranean.

The six-week unsupported journey in his kayak has seen him paddling for 40 to 50 miles a day from north to south, often making landfall after dark, where he usually sets up camp on the beach.

Although an experienced Kayaker, Jack described the journey as a “big challenge”. Jack has extensively explored England’s southern coastline, as well as longer trips including around Southern Scotland and the entire Welsh Coastline.

He's raising money for mental health charity Suicide&Co.’ which supports families bereaved through suicide.

Jack said: “Growing up in West Wittering, I have been lucky enough to have a childhood on the sea kayaking with my father in a double since I was five. I love exploring, being on the water, and Turkey – so I combined all my passions for this trip. It is a big challenge, and there have been ups and downs throughout.

“Suicide touches so many families and recent years have been particularly tough for lots of people –I wanted to do something that would support this fantastic charity.”
