What Difference Does Sussex's Sunshine Make To Our Lives?

A university researcher is trying to find out what living in Britain's sunniest county means to us.

According to the Met Office, Sussex contains most of Britain's sunniest towns, with Bognor Regis, Eastbourne and Hastings regularly coming at the top of sunshine "league tables".

Now, a woman reading Geography in the University of Aberystwyth has begun researching what impact the sunny weather makes on our lives.

Niamh Brennan said she remembers growing up with regular visits to family in Eastbourne, and being entranced with the town's weather from an early age.

Today, she is assessing in scientific terms what it means to be affected by Sussex's weather.

Niamh told More Radio:

"As human geographers we learn about interactions between people and weather, with the topics having a long standing relationship.

"However in society we never really notice the impact weather has on our feelings, behaviour and experiences.

"On a sunny day, people's moods are seen as happier, fast pace and full of life; whereas when we picture our lives on a rainy day we see it as more dreary and slow."

She said her present location, on the coast of Wales, is a great contrast to life on England's south coast:

"Living in Aberystwyth I see the impact weather has on the environment every day.

"Here, we adapt our lives around the sea and the chaos it causes with large storms taking place every year.

"However, little study has been undertaken to discover how sunshine makes us interact, which is why I have chosen the topic."

Niamh is currently collecting personal experiences, reflections and comments on the role of Sussex's sunshine in our lives.
