Witnesses sought after man seriously assaults elderly couple in their Crawley home

Police are appealing for witnesses after a couple in their 70s were seriously assaulted in their home in Crawley last week. An unknown man reportedly knocked on the door of the property in Fulham Close at around 9.45pm on Thursday (January,30), carrying a stick. The individual assaulted the male victim, significantly injuring his face, and forced his way into the house. Officers said the female victim was also assaulted. The elderly couple fought off the perpetrator, who left the house with the male’s wallet. Medical treatment and support was provided by officers. Police said the suspect is described as a black man, around 5’8’’ and appeared to be aged in his teens/early twenties. He was said to be wearing black trousers and a jacket, a white and black face covering and may have been wearing black leather gloves. DI Duncan Elliott said: “This was an awful attack and we are determined to bring the person responsible to justice. “We commend the bravery of the victims in coming forwards to report this incident promptly. “We’re urging anyone who witnessed anything suspicious that night to please come forward.” Inspector Steve Turner said: “We understand this was a distressing event for those involved and would like to reassure the local community that this is thought to be an isolated incident. We currently have an increased police presence in the area." Anyone with information is asked to contact 101, quoting Operation Hubble.
