Woman Attacked In Bed By Burglar In Chichester

Attacker: entered through unlocked door (stock image)

A woman has been attacked in her bed by a man burgling the property where she was sleeping in Chichester's Adelaide Road.

Police say the victim woke up screaming at around 5.45am on Sunday (August 9) when she realised an intruder was holding her by the shoulders.

The man had, apparently, taken advantage of a door that had been left insecure.

An alert came through to police when the victim's shouts were reported to officers.

Soon after, the burglar ran from the property, using the same door through which he had entered.

The woman reported that after she, too, ran outside, a person was seen to mount a moped or motorbike about 100 yards along the road.

It's not certain that this person was the intruder — and, if not, police believe they may be an important witness.

After the burglary and assault, the victim realised her handbag, containing her passport, student card and cash, had been stolen from the property.

The intruder has been described by police as white, in his 20s, around 6' tall, and wearing a dark T-shirt with black or grey jogging bottoms and trainers.

Inspector Sharon Sawyer of Sussex Police said:

"This was obviously a very alarming experience.

"While the man's intentions are not known, it may be that he entered the house with a view to burglary and was diverted by the presence of the victim in her bed.

"In this hot weather, however, it does reinforce the need to ensure that if you do leave windows or doors open to keep cool, they should be suitably secured to prevent unwelcome intruders.

"This applies as much to an unattended room or area in daytime as much as during the night."

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to report online or call 101 quoting serial 373 of 09/08.
