Worthing Borough Council has been awarded more than £100,000 of Government money to kickstart plans for more emergency homes for families.
The Council wants to redevelop the former RAF Air Cadets site in Victoria Road to create flats for families who are at risk of becoming homeless.
There are more than 1600 people on the housing register in Worthing.
The Council applied to the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities for financial support and was awarded £104,000 from the Brownfield Land Release Fund to prepare the site for the new homes.
Following consultation events with local residents in July, the Council plans to build 11 flats with communal gardens on the Victoria Road site.
A formal planning application is expected to be submitted in January 2023, which will take into consideration the feedback from the consultation.
Councillor Emma Taylor, Worthing’s Cabinet Member for Citizen Services, said:
“We are desperately in need of emergency housing and this money is welcome as it will allow us to prepare the site and hopefully get the flats built as soon as possible.”
The Government funding will be used to remove the existing huts from the site. Overgrown bushes will also be cut back and cleared.
