Worthing Mosque To Take Part In National Open Day

Worthing Mosque, alongside more than 200 Mosques across the UK, will be taking part in this year’s National Visit My Mosque (VMM) Day, the largest mosque open day event in the UK.

The national event came about in 2015 after the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) managed to get 20 mosques around Britain to hold their open days at around the same time of year.

By 2016, 80 mosques were participating all over the UK with national media coverage. In 2017, 150; 2018, 200; in 2019, 250. During the pandemic, the open days went online.

A YouGov Poll commissioned by the MCB in 2018, was all the proof they needed that open days were a worthwhile event.

It found that almost 70% of Britons "hadn't seen the inside of another faith's place of worship" and almost 90% hadn't been inside a mosque.

The VMM initiative was brought about to try to change that and also to change perceptions around Islam and Muslims.

This year, Worthing Mosque will be welcoming visitors on Sunday 4th September.

This is particularly special as it returns to being a physical event for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began, and so the theme is: “welcome back, welcome in.”

Worthing Mosque looks forward to sharing with visitors our exhibitions, the history of the Mosque and our work in the wider community through an interactive tour.
