Yellow Weather Warning Of Thunderstorms For West Sussex One Day After Long Furlong Wild Fire

A weather warning has been issued for West Sussex on Friday just a day after a fire broke out in a field in Long Furlong near Findon due to extreme hot weather.

West Sussex Fire & Rescue say the small fire in a field was quickly brought under control after they were called at 1.43pm on Wednesday (July 20).

One fire engine was sent to the scene with two hoses used to extinguish it.

A spokesperson for the service said:

"Although temperatures have dropped since the beginning of the week, the risk of wildfires breaking out remains high.

"We would urge everyone to take extra care when out and about to minimise the risk of fire breaking out.

"Please avoid starting fires in open countryside, ensure cigarettes are extinguished properly and responsibly and take litter home with you - especially glass, If you discover fire, dial 999 immediately."

Meanwhile, a yellow weather warning warns of thunderstorms in the county between 10am and 10pm on Friday (July 22).

The Met Office said:

"While some areas will remain dry, slow moving, heavy thunderstorms are likely to develop from mid to late morning, likely peaking during the afternoon and early evening before decaying later."

Over in East Sussex, Hastings recorded the hottest day on record on Tuesday (July 19) as temperatures peaked at 37 degrees C, half a degree hotter than the previous record, recorded on July 25, 2019.
