Yellow Weather Warning In Place As Storm Franklin Brings 50-60mph Winds

The Met Office is warning strong winds will continue into today as Storm Franklin brings winds of over 50mph to the south east - Southern Rail and Thameslink are asking people not to travel.

Forecasts show winds speeds of over 50mph will continue across the south east until mid afternoon, although it's currently looking dry with sunny spells along the way.

What to expect

  • Some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, could happen, along with trees/branches being brought down
  • Road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible
  • Some roads and bridges may close
  • Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties

The Met Office is warning that storms over the weekend could already have loosened structures, so drivers and pedestrians should continue to look out for flying debris.

Meanwhile, Southern Railway and Thameslink are asking people not to travel again today, saying some services will be disrupted due to ongoing work to remove debris from the line and new debris brought with more high winds today.

Trains will be running at a reduced speed and the situation is expected to changeable throughout the day with services cancelled. Passengers to Gatwick Airport will need to leave plenty of time to get to their destination.
